COMMITTEE SEEKS VIEWS ON FEATURES AND LOCATION OF FOUNDERS’ MEMORIAL IN NEXT PHASE OF ENGAGEMENTS
17 September 2016, Singapore – Singaporeans are invited to participate in a series of workshops to envision the visitor experience and physical features of a Founders’ Memorial that is values-centred, forward-looking, and inspiring to future generations. Organised by the Founders’ Memorial Committee, the first of four public workshops was held today as part of the Committee’s second phase of engagements. The public can sign up for the next three workshops, which will be held on 15 October, 5 November and 12 November.
2 During the workshop, participants brainstormed various prototypes of what they envision the Founders’ Memorial could look like from the users’ perspective. Through this exercise, the Committee hopes to garner ideas for the programming and physical features of the Memorial.
3 Mr Lee Tzu Yang, Chairman of the Founders’ Memorial Committee, said, “In this phase of engagement, the Committee would like to hear from Singaporeans on the features they would like the Memorial to encompass and how Fort Canning Park or Bay East Garden could complement the desired narrative of the Memorial. To start off this phase of engagement, we have invited members of the public who participated in the first phase last year to continue this conversation. We invite more Singaporeans to come forward to share what you envision this Memorial to be.”
4 Singaporeans who are interested to sign up for future public workshops can register at https://www.foundersmemorial.sg/.
5 The Founders’ Memorial Committee will also be engaging stakeholder groups including architects and designers; historians and academics; educators; youth, grassroots and community groups. Following these workshops, the Committee intends to continue to engage Singaporeans widely through mass outreach efforts in the second quarter of 2017.
About the Founders' Memorial Committee
The 15-member Committee was formed in end June 2015 to gather views from the public and to conceptualise a memorial to honour and remember the values and ideals of the founders of Singapore.
About First Phase of Engagements
In March 2016, the Committee shared its findings from the first phase of engagements, held from October 2015 to January 2016, to gather views on the idea of a Founders’ Memorial. Based on the findings, the Committee made a recommendation to develop a Memorial that is values-centred and forward-looking, which can inspire future generations. The Committee also explored two possible locations for the Memorial – Fort Canning and Gardens by the Bay’s Bay East Garden - and has stated its preference for Bay East Garden. The Government has asked the Committee to consult the public further before making a final decision.
